Instructors at educational institutions are often faced with high stress resulting from heavy teaching loads and limited time. When teachers cannot manage their own time and stress, they cannot fully serve the needs of their students. This course will show instructors how to manage time and stress in their lives and teach some of these skills to their students.
ED111RActive Learning Methods
This course provides an introduction to the concept and philosophy of active learning, and describes a variety of methods to help instructors "activ-ate" their class. The course includes active learning examples that utilize both critical and analytical thinking skills. We also identify the risks that may discourage instructors from using active learning strategies and offer suggestions for managing them. A three-step method is suggested for developing an active lesson, and a comprehensive model is offered as a guide for creative active learning strategies.
ED112REnhancing the Motivation of Adult Students
This course is intended to help instructors motivate their adult students. Modules 1, 2, and 3 review characteristics of adult learners and explain issues that affect motivation. Module 4 includes a discussion of the basic classes of motivators.
Modules 2 and 3 focus on two major topics that influence adult education. These are security and autonomy, both of which can be enhanced using motivational strategies. We will often refer to andragogy, which is the art and science of helping adults learn. Andragogy emphasizes methods and techniques that are self-directed, feature relevant learning, and teach real-world skills. You will learn effective motivational techniques that help adult students feel secure and enjoy a degree of control over their learning process.
ED113RManaging the Adult Classroom
This course is intended to familiarize new and experienced instructors with basic concepts, strategies, and trends related to adult education. There is a particular emphasis on several styles of classroom management and associated implications for both teaching and learning.
Four modules are included. Modules 1 and 2 provide descriptions of five styles of management and four types of instructors. Module 3 is dedicated to the theoretical and practical implications of discipline as it relates to adult students. Module 4 includes five sections on topics related to andragogy (the art or science of teaching adults) and the management of adult education.
ED114RQuestioning in the Classroom
In this course we describe the types and characteristics of questions instructors ask when teaching. We define two methods of classifying questions: the first according to the particular skill required to answer them, and the second according to their complexity and the cognitive level used when responding. We discuss appropriate circumstances when various types of questions should be asked, and we refer to studies that support our recommendations. Three instructional strategies are explained that can result in more effective questioning. Four practices are described that instructors use—or should use—during their lessons. Finally, thirteen tips are offered for review and for enhancing and improving an instructor’s questioning strategy and technique.

ED161AI Ethics, Bias, and Responsible Use
Your students will enter workplaces where artificial intelligence (AI) impacts hiring, daily tasks, and career advancement. This course builds directly on your AI Literacy Foundations knowledge, diving deep into the "Responsible Use" pillar. Frequently the learning takes place in a lab or shop environment, where the traditional rules of classroom management and teaching may not always apply. This course covers the instructional techniques necessary for the non-traditional classroom, including strategies for teaching to each student's individual learning style. In addition, this course describes strategies for assessing student progress. Safety guidelines and considerations for specific lab and shop environments are identified.
EL104Teaching and Organizing a Virtual Learning Environment
This course will provide you with basic information to teach in a virtual learning environment and understand the importance of organizing course content. You will learn about the important role technology tools play in teaching and organizing an online course. You will also learn the difference between synchronous and asynchronous learning. As the components of each are discussed, you will further identify appropriate methods, develop guidelines, organize content, and establish a pattern of teaching for each method.
